Maranhão is one of a states of Brazil in the north-eastern vicinity. To the northward is the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. Neighboring states come (from either east clockwise) Piauí, Tocantins and Pará.

Major cities in a state besides the state capital São Luís are Imperatriz Timon Caxias A Alcantara spaceport is located in the northward of the state, shortly from either São Luís.

History
Despite a fact that a state capital São Luís was founded per French in 1612, it is said to become the Brazilian state capital which virtually all closely resembles a Portuguese city.

the historic central city was declared a world heritage site in 1997. A French misplaced a city within 1614 to the Portuguese.

Around 1621 Ceará, Maranhão & Pará were united and known as a Estarun do Maranhão. It stayed independent until 1774, when it became administrated by colonial Brazil.
